- Janus was the Roman god of gateways and of beginnings and endings in time. The month of January is named for this two-headed god, whose two faces were usually depicted as looking forward and backward in time. A Temple of Janus stood in the Roman Forum, where the temple's main gates were closed in times of peace, but stood open through centuries of war. The symbolism of the gates was not lost on the citizens of Rome, whose empire was virtually synonymous with perpetual warfare: the gates of Janus were closed only five times in the entire history of the empire… making an oxymoron of the term Pax Romana - a historical period of relative peace that was dwarfed by imperial Rome's bloody history of military conquest and inevitable, final decline.
